41. WHAT IS PPE? WHAT IS PPE?

For the industrial workwear market the CE Marking indicates conformity with the essential health and safety requirements set out in European Directive 89/686/EEC. This Directive applies to personal protective equipment, hereinafter referred to as 'PPE'. PPE is defined in as ‘all equipment (including clothing affording protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work and which protects him against one or more risks to his health or safety', e.g. safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses.

Before any item of PPE may be placed on the European Community market, it must meet fully the requirements of the Directive, including the CE marking. The marking currently consists of the letters ‘CE' and should be affixed to the product and to its packaging in a visible, legible and indelible form.
